Health research is complicated for project teams and investors. We would like to build on the experiences of the venture philanthropy community to help develop a toolkit to make the investment process more efficient and easier to navigate. This will address issues around: how collaborative teams work together better; how research strategies keep focus to prioritise wins; lean management practices; how results are owned and exploited; and using projects as catalysts for building ambitious programmes.
The rare disease project Vision DMD has been successfully funded by venture philanthropy, and leveraged grants from the EC and US to develop an innovative drug for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This has provided a starting point and a useful case study showing how pooled investments have de-risked and scaled up a programme of innovative drug development and education.
