We all know social ventures deserve the support of grant-funding. But if we want them to become sustainable, how can we shift them away from grant-dependency and towards more trade-based models? Two years ago, the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) launched Match Trading™ grants to resolve this dilemma: grant-funding that pound-for-pound matches an increase in income from trading. By rewarding sales growth, Match Trading incentivises social organisations to develop their trading base, so they can build stronger futures. Pilots of Match Trading grants have seen social ventures increase their income from trading by around 90% (median) in one year, with the additional support of an SSE learning programme. Match Trading has now been used by more than 500 social enterprises, charities and community businesses.
