How to reach and include the most vulnerable groups? Anika Altaf has written her PhD: The many hidden faces of Extreme Poverty in 2018. It is an assessment of development interventions from the perception of recipients in Ethiopia, Benin and Bangladesh. One of the most important and striking conclusions of this study was its failure to reach the poor and the very poor, meaning that the bulk of interventions were not reaching these groups. Poverty is too often seen solely from the material point of view. The relational and cognitive aspects of poverty hardly get attention. Self-exclusion at one side and discrimination at the other side are difficult challenges to overcome in reaching the ultra poor. What are the best practices and do's and don'ts within venture philantropy approaches? Betteke de Gaay Fortman and Dorothee ter Kulve both have experience in supporting strong local organisations who do reach the ultra-poor in an effective and structural way.
